Pure Strategies met with Seventh Generation staff and managers to identify the full range of corporate social responsibility issues relevant to its business. We produced a set of underlying data to map out the company's environmental impacts and reviewed the firm's policies and systems for managing CSR related issues. Our staff evaluated the raw data used to document the company's social and economic performance and was also asked to independently identify key opportunities for improvement.

For example, we found that the company had little data on the social and environmental performance of many of its suppliers. As a result, in 2004, we assisted the company in a new supplier engagement program. In another case, we prepared a greenhouse gas life cycle analysis of the firm's liquid laundry detergent and discovered that its greatest impact resulted from the use of warm or hot water by consumers. This highlighted the need to create products designed to function optimally in cold water, which would reduce the energy and pollution associated with hot water heating.
