Seventh Generation Wins Best Sustainability Report Award
Boston-based Ceres and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants honored the 2007 Spheres of Influence Report Pure Strategies developed with Seventh Generation as best North American report for an SME. Judges cited the report’s (www.svg2007report.org) candid reflection on the challenges of long-term sustainability for the company, the industry, and for society. The judges further commended the letter by CEO Jeffrey Hollender (link) for its insightful discussion of the importance — and difficulty — of being a transparent company. In addition to in-depth coverage of sourcing, product design, supply chain engagement, carbon footprint and outreach efforts, the report details the company’s efforts to conduct traceability studies on its cleaning products (link) — an interesting challenge in a time of increasingly global supply chains.
Pure Strategies collaborated on the report with design partner Monty Lewis | Design.

Supply Chain Sustainability: Lessons learned from Pure Strategies and Stonyfield Farm
It's not easy to align your supply chain with your company's sustainability goals. There are several first steps we recommend to based on our work with Stonyfield Farm as outlined in the attached article. Success starts with communicating your company's commitment and vision to your suppliers and then moving on to substantive issue ares. Its important to involve your CEO and the CEO or other senior VPs at the start of this process. Lastly, what gets measured gets managed - so develop supplier metrics integrate them into your business processes.
Look at the Stonyfield Farm experience. We prepared their first cradle-to-gate chain carbon footprint in 1999. Based on those results, Stonyfield began reaching out to its famers, packaging vendors, and its logistics providers. Ten years later, with many hard fought gains under its belt, the company has its eye on an even greater array of opportunities. Six lessons stand out:
Stonyfield's Farm's Supply-Chain Sustainability Lessons Learned
- Partnership - approach suppliers as partners, engage but don't mandate.
- Educate - appeal to common sense, everyone wants to be a good environmental steward.
- Ecomonics - being environmentally friendly has a positive economic return.
- Focus on the data - collect lots of data and base decisions on facts.
- Do your homework - leverage supplier resources and knowledge.
- 'Just Ask' - Our suppliers told us "No one every asked us before".

Tim Greiner Helps 'Stir it Up'
Tim Greiner, Managing Director of Pure Strategies, is recognized for his contributions to improving corporate sustainability in Gary Hirshberg's engaging book, Stirring It Up: How to Make Money and Save the World. In his 2008 book, Hirshberg, the CE-Yo of Stonyfield Farm Yogurt, describes how he built a successful $300 million-per-year business while embracing environmental principles and practices. He notes Tim's pivitol role in guiding Stonyfield's journey on the road to being green. Hirshberg demonstrates that going green actually saves companies money in the long run. Companies that measure and reduce their climate footprint, cut down on trash and packaging, convert waste to energy, and build sustainable supplier relations can enjoy greater consumer loyalty and significant savings over the long term as Stonyfield Farm Yogurt has.
