Ken Soltys

Ken Soltys is a Senior Scientist at Pure Strategies with 30+ years experience performing applications development, process development, market development and sales in the plastics, paint and household products. Recent work includes:
- Coauthored an alternatives assessment for decabromodiphenyl ether used in plastic shipping pallets for the state of Maine.
- Conducted a materials forecast for liquid crystal displays in mobile phones.
- Investigated the human health hazards of Bisphenol A and polycarbonate in food applications.
- Investigated the safety of additives used in polylactic acid for food applications
- Currently preparing materials standards for paper and plastics used for household personal care products.
- Conducted a chemical safety and management assessment for a toy manufacturer.
Past work experience includes the development of silicone additives for polycarbonate and polyurethanes; applications development for silicone resin in high performance paints; technical service for silicone rubber. He also developed additives for PVC and polyurethane foam – US Patent #3,417,038 “Plastics Foam Additive.”
Ken also served as team leader for 12 years with the Massachusetts Office of Technical Assistance, where he visited and provided technical assistance to over 700 manufacturing facilities. His main function was to oversee a team of four professionals and provide technical assistance to Massachusetts manufacturers in finding non-hazardous alternatives to hazardous chemicals used in their process and/or product.
Ken has a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Widener University, Chester, Pennsylvania and completed continuing education courses in Pulp and Paper manufacturing, Organogeochemistry, Instrumental Analysis, Fundamentals of Industrial Hygiene and Process Safety Management. Ken has served on the Technical Advisory Committee for the development of Green Screen 2.0. He is also currently a Commissioner for the Hingham Conservation Commission.
